This just in from the fire safety investigators LODD IN HARTFORD
I feel it is because of the lack of funding all departments have had to deal with that is at the core of these problems more than lack of caring or negligence.
We should try to get some other active duty Firefighters here to bring us up to speed with what their departments are dealing with in this area.
Lieutenant Fritz, it is a crime in it's self to use faulty and not certified safe equipment, maybe the answer would be for all stations to be made go through all their equipment and have some replaced, stop the LODD give the crews the proper safe tools.
These comments are not to criticise departments but to try and find a way to analyse problems to make a safe work place.
I agree Captain Thain with your observations about the "failed SCBA" in Connecticut. This LODD should have never happened, but the age of that equipment and the fact that they were not tested or certified for many years made it inevitable that an accident like this would happen.
Thank you for your input sir.
This is a great forum to give ideas to try and find out why so many brothers and sisters are losing their lives needlessly in the Fire department. I notice every week a fire fighter has been killed or seriously injured on the job, it is time there was an inquiry why this is happening. I know all the resources are out there re; training, safety and use and maintenance of equipment which has been compiled from years of learning from past on the job deaths and injuries, I think the training of officers who must pass this on to new recruits is failing, please look at this example of maybe equipment failure would have been spotted if checked on a regular basis, I know from my experience scba's seem to be the last thing Firemen want to check or clean, but it is the most important piece of equipment that will save your life.

I leave this open for discussion
Recently I came across this posting and was moved to comment about what had transpired. I wish to have the thoughts of other Firefighters, especially incident commanders about what you feel about this tragic event.
