I am having trouble conforming to the medical procedures I have been trained to use as an EMT-B.
I follow the protocol for the most part but I have found myself confronted with situations that were deemed beyond the parameters and authority of an EMT-B.
I suppose I have trouble understanding that I am no longer in a battlefield situation…

NEW YORK — A 6-year-old boy who was made an honorary New York City firefighter during his battle with cancer has been remembered at a solemn memorial service.
Little Liam Witt died Jan. 24 after enduring years of radiation and chemotherapy.
The firefighters of Ladder Co. 24 and Engine Co. 1 admired Liam’s fighting spirit. They gave him his own locker in their midtown Manhattan firehouse.
Dozens of firefighters… Continue

Once again the news reports are of an accident caused from clear negligence and failure to follow basic protocol.
It is reported that individuals are being dismissed from their department because of an accident on a railroad crossing in Michigan involving a fire truck and a train. I ask everyone to follow this link, read the article and… Continue

I am a "man", ( a human being, a person, a member of the human race).
I have a presence, beliefs and possibly a soul (spirit). I am responsible for my words..actions and thoughts and must be mindful of the needs of my "family" ( everyone else). I must understand that I am not alone and so I must take responsibility for everything in this life without hesitation as it is a fact that together we prevail.... divided we fail.
To understand that everything I do, think and say will… Continue

Two Canadian girls die in a house fire in Surrey British Columbia and a Surrey Firefighter is burned over 30 percent of his body trying to save them. This Firefighter is a true and noble example of the dedication, determination and selflessness of the followers of the Knights of Saint John.
I am sad to know the girls died but I know it was not from a lack of trying on the part of all who attempted to rescue them.
We all need to be… Continue

Your cell phone is in your pocket. He clutches the cross
hanging on his chain next to his dog tags. He knows he may not see
some of his buddies again.
You walk down the beach, staring at all
the pretty girls. He patrols the streets, searching for insurgents
and terrorists. He's told he will be held over an… Continue

Fear and hate are, have been and always will be the "mind killers" that will consume all who choose to act before they think.
For every "right" that is afforded to any people under any social structure there are enormous responsibilities and duties that must be undertaken by everyone. No one has any "rights" unless they earn them.
America today is full of people who declare they have the… Continue

In the current times of economic, social and political discord that divides us all, I have noticed that there is a commonality in tradition and protocol around the world in the Fire Service.
The following picture tutorial opens up the Japanese Firefighters world for all to see that some things stay the same no matter where you go in this world. I found this to be interesting and hope you will too.

The Dalai Lama said :
"We can't say that all religions are the same, different religions have different views and fundamental differences. But it does not matter, as all religions are meant to help in bringing about a better world with better and happier human beings. On this level, I think that through different philosophical explanations and…

Fear and hate are the "mind killers". All that we hope for will be lost if we allow ourselves to be consumed or motivated by our fears and stumble into the dark and unproductive realm of hatred.
Revenge is an extension of hatred that will consume spiritual energy we need to produce positive results in working, playing, creating art and learning to love ourselves. If we can not truly love ourselves then we are lost. Once we are lost then the following words become our… Continue
