Firefighters open chat room for serious learning and sharing without fear

What is happening with fire  training today? I notice nearly every week we lose a firefighter on scene, is it communication? training? Safety on fire ground ?  Are instructors really qualified? are Building codes re: roof structures being violated?  Wall collapsing on firefighters ?

I think we should all step back and examine the education of recruits it saddens me to see these souls lost, in an age where the standard of equipment is the best and more and more tools are invented for protection, yet these deaths still occur. I see firefighters and some officers with no breathing apparatus on, I hope this will start  constructive comments in FirefighterCountry  I will be interested to see them.

Thank you Captain Thain! I feel very strongly that your point indicating the improper use or lack of use of the needed PPE's are a large contributor to the deaths and serious injuries being seen at so many incidents.

The Firefighter in New York City that went to an incident and was told by the reporting co-worker of the victim that the other individual went down into a man h*** and half way down just passed out and fell. So  the Firefighter went to retrieve the victim without his SCBA and he too succumbed to the poison gas and they both died!

I was shocked to see this especially because the Firefighter was told about the smell of foul gas. We all know it is better to be safe than sorry but I see so many Fireman and Policemen who do not want to take the time to wear their gear properly. Helmets that are not strapped secure, reflective vests not worn and the police often will not wear the bullet proof vests because they feel they will look like cowards to the other cops! Come on people, the work we do is extremely dangerous and if you are fortunate enough to have the proper gear, damn it... wear it and use it.. all of it!

Good job Captain, keep up the good work with blogs like this one.
