Defense Secretary say's of the Fort Hood shooting: "Something is not working"?
I still respect Secretary Hagel but I am sad to hear such a "politicians" statement from an "old salt" ( in NAVY parlance) who has only been in the "cesspool" at the White House for such a short time.
To myself, a Veteran who's service began 45 years ago, I feel the words "something is broken" would be more appropriate. Nothing like this ever happened that I am aware of when I was in service to our country. Our servicemen now are killing themselves and each other at an alarming rate, while our nations detractors are cheering! The "sleeping giant" is dying and our government is for sale. These incidents can only be expected. I feel they are not "nutters" who need to be discovered at any cost but only good, caring and loving pessimists. I say this because I was once told that "a pessimist was just an optimist who was seriously disappointed by life". These people I can relate to as I am hurt deeply by what I see our country becoming too. I am not ready to haul out the firearms and head to town for a shoot out with the cops, I am too strong spiritually to be tempted to "jump off that cliff", but I can understand what might cause someone a bit more prone to need a support network to do these horrible things.
I live in a rural area just outside of a small city. Every week I listen to the Fire and Police transmissions calling for assistance from the needed departments for teen alcohol poisoning.. attempted suicide by teens mostly, but some adults.. children who are "out of control" attacking their parents... assaults with injuries by cohabitants. Now just for good measure, the city "planners" have opted to make the suburban areas a crash fest by having most of the intersecting streets totally devoid of any traffic regulatory device! Yep, just do the speed limit, 35 mph, and hope nothing happens. SWEET! They have auto wrecks with injuries all year round. Some result in rollovers and occupants needing to be extricated on what is by anyone's measure just quiet back streets with single family homes.
Now what do you feel might be the reasons for all this discord with the youth in a small city of just 30,000 people? I feel stories like this one that seem to be an accepted fact of life rather than a freak one time occurrence. The fact that it was not a civilian at a big box store is seriously troubling for children too. When the people who do these things are at the top of your list of "heroes" you would call for help when it all goes south and you are not even old enough to vote, you might just feel like "going home" too. Those are the words half conscious victims, having near death episodes from trauma, have said to myself and my team on the Fire Departments where I served when we were working hard to save them.
I have learned, "I just want to go home", means they wish to leave their mortal coil behind and go back to where they came from.
All of the shootings in our schools, leaving our children with issues similar to combat veterans, and national issues ranging from murders at government installations to bold and shameless acts of corruption and malfeasance by trusted government leaders, local seats of judicial power and their enforcers, medical and trade professionals and even those who are our go to "last resort" for spiritual help and guidance, are in this Americans eyes, more than enough reason for children and scared adults to just give up and behave badly!
Most Americans live "neck deep" in every available comfort that life could possibly offer and yet we have all of this discord in our society. How is this possible? We throw away quality, unbroken goods because they are no longer fashionable! We are eating ourselves to death and it seems that we can no longer trust or believe in the institutions that made our nation great. All good reasons to just STOP!, and take a good long look at "the man in the mirror" and truly believe there is room for improvement.
I am constantly reaching out to institutions in need of manpower on any level in my community so I may grow and better myself as a citizen and human being. Most of my attempts are met with rejection for one reason or other that does not add up. But some agencies are not "threatened" by an honest man with the will and desire to start at the bottom, even at my age and with my experience I demand nothing more than entry level opportunities, and give all possible in these times of great need from all Americans to "be part of the solution, not part of the problem."
