TO EDUCATE.. SUPPORT.. PROTECT AND GIVE OF YOURSELF TO YOUR FELLOW MAN

I have been able to be a positive force in the lives of so many people who were in need over the many years as a Firefighter and as a long distance truck driver. I have never looked for the opportunities to be helpful because my life was difficult enough to handle so I was spread pretty thin already. But if ever I was called to duty as a Volunteer Firefighter I was willing to drop whatever was my previous charge and go.

Driving from border to border and coast to coast allowed me to witness first hand all manner of discord in the lives of my fellow citizens that too often fell right into my path. I have not the strength to just turn a "blind eye" to any living thing in danger or distress so if I felt I had whatever was needed to be of help I would give it, even if it was my last five bucks! I had a job and so knew I would make more. The people I gave the money to were where I was only a short "loss of my job" away from, so I understood what they were suffering.

I will never take money from anyone I help because for myself, the thanks they offer is more than money can buy. It just makes me feel good inside and since I came home from the war I do not get much of that. I am so grateful to be accepted and feel my life is not just wasted breath and food that could be used for someone else who is much greater than myself. So any time I feel like maybe I have wasted my life I dig through a box of, what for me are 'treasures' and read all the wonderful cards and letters I have collected over the years like this one and a feeling comes over me that makes my worst days bright.

I will bring this donation to my district Fire Department Chief as the note instructs me and hope the hatred the Kearney Fire Department officers have toward me will not cause them to reject it.  If that happens then I will return it to these good caring people who, through so much effort to find my address, felt it necessary to give of themselves after my simple act of 'doing the right thing' and offering their troop, who were obviously moving household goods a fair distance, a floor jack, three four foot emergency cones and a little muscle to remove the flat tire on the trailer they were towing.

It happened right in front of where I am staying. How could anyone look away? Not a big deal and I knew how dangerous U S Highway 30 with it's narrow shoulders was for stopped vehicles. I would have felt really sick if I had just gone on with my business and they were involved in an accident and lost their property or worse.  I noticed that even with the emergency cones, my one ton Chevy crew cab pickup with all my lights on or flashing and my six foot nine inch 'beanpole' self in a high visibility vest, the traffic was still not slowing very much.

The man driving the vehicle pulling the trailer tried to give me a cash "thank you" that day and I refused and informed him that he could do me a good turn if he took away from this event any of the safety tips about the cones, wearing reflective cloths or the spotter I encouraged one of his troop to be to warn of 'INCOMING' traffic. And if possible support his local Fire Department any way he could because for myself it is all about.. to educate.. support.. protect and give of yourself to your fellow man.

Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Smets for your generous and loving hearts!

Be well and stay safe everyone.

I went to a State Fire Marshal training event at the Kearney Fire Department training ground, I was rejected from the class but they did take this money from the Smets!
